Heroes without horses

Here we have a page of abilities for a dozen creatures from the Monster Manual which may be used as exotic mounts. All of them are from the Heroic Tier.

  • Venom-Eye Basilisk
  • Tangler Beetle
  • Macetail Behemoth
  • Bloodspike Behemoth
  • Carrion Crawler
  • Chuul
  • Destrachan
  • Displacer Beast
  • Cacklefiend Hyena
  • Ogre Savage
  • Unicorn
  • Worg

Yes, that Ogre Savage is correct. Who doesn’t envision a goblin perched atop an ogre shouting orders at it?

Haha, awesome. You can never have enough cool mounts.

    A couple of things–

    1. For the tangler beetle’s ability, what do you mean by a “free charge attack”? A charge as a free action? That seems a bit unreasonable, what with the movement entailed. Or something else . . . ?

    2. I assume the “when” at the beginning of the Chuul’s ability is a typo.

    3. For the hyena, 1d6->2d8 is a big jump. Is there a reason why it’s not, for example, 2d6? I’m not very familiar with the mount abilities in general (unfortunately) so I’m not sure where the balance is.

    4. Another typo in the unicorn entry, I think: “The unicorn gains heals . . .”

I’ve already added your site to my RSS reader, I quite like your stuff so far. (Anybody who answers, “What new monsters should I make for 4E first?” with, “Evil frogs!” is a good person in my book. Especially when they follow it up with mushroom men.)

Hey, thanks for catching those typos. #1 is as intended. In my play tests a free charge wasn’t too powerful. The other three things you mentioned were mistakes and I’ll put up a corrected version right away.
